Coimbatore: As many 35 families living in the tribal hamlet of Kandivazhi in Anaikatti are forced to live in the dark for a two days after a wild elephant pushed down an electric pole that takes electricity to the hamlet here.

According to sources, the pole located at Kondanur Pudhur on the way to the hamlet was pushed down by a tusker around 8.30 pm on Wednesday leaving the hamlet in dark. The elephant had tried to rub against the pole and it fell on the spot pulling another pole along with it, which resulted in the power shut down.

Though local people informed officials of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, they did not arrive until Friday.

“More than 100 people live here including children and we all depend on water for a borewell set up here. If there is no electricity, there will be no water,” said G. Kadalan from the hamlet.

He further added that without proper lights, they were at the risk of encountering or at worse being attacked by wild elephants during the night.

“It becomes a very dangerous situation at night with wild animals moving around,” he pondered.

TANGEDCO officials finally arrived at the scene on Friday and erected two new poles. However, connection may not be provided on the day as work could not be completed because of rain.
