MDMK Chief Vaiko convicted to one year imprisonment in 2009 sedition case

In a setback to MDMK Chief Vaiko, a special Court has convicted him in a sedition case dating back to 2009.

In a setback to MDMK Chief Vaiko, a special Court has convicted him in a sedition case dating back to 2009.

Hearing the case, Judge Shanthi held Vaiko guilty of sedition for a speech that Vaiko had delivered during a book launch event of 'Naan Kutram Saatrukiren' in Chennai in 2009. This was at a time when the civil war was raging in Sri Lanka and was at its peak. Vaiko had aired his views in support of the LTTE during the controversial speech. A police case was filed against Vaiko for his seditious speech during the book release.

However, a petition was filed on Vaiko’s behalf suspending the sentence which would allow the MDMK leader to file his appeal against the conviction. Interestingly, Vaiko is to file his nomination papers for Rajya Sabha on Saturday, since he is one of the candidates from Tamil Nadu to contest the polls scheduled for July 18. Ironically, even though his candidature is supported by the DMK now, it was during the DMK regime that the sedition case was booked against the veteran leader.
