City police arrests extortion gang impersonating as income tax officials

Coimbatore: The police have arrested a gang of five men who impersonated as income tax officials and tried to extort money from two cloth merchants from Kerala, near Madukkarai in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: The police have arrested a gang of five men who impersonated as income tax officials and tried to extort money from two cloth merchants from Kerala, near Madukkarai in Coimbatore. 

Faisal and Moideen, brothers from Malappuram in Kerala who are into textile business had purchased clothes in bulk from a private company in Chokkampudur in Coimbatore, on June 3, and were travelling back to Kerala. A gang of men who were reportedly following them in their car, waylaid the brothers claiming to be income tax officials and inspected the car. 



The brothers suspected foul play and began arguing with the gang. When people started gathering to witness the verbal tussle, the gang of five men reportedly fled the spot. The incident was then reported to the police.

 

On orders from the Superintendent of Police, Sujith Kumar, a special team led by Balamurugan, the Deputy Superintendent of Police investigated the incident with the help of CCTV footage in nearby areas as well as the Madukkarai border. 



With the help of the car's number plate, the police identified the five men and arrested them. On further investigation, it was found out that the accused are Ravikumar, Vignesh, Sathish, Veerakumar and Stalin from Theni. The gang has several criminal cases pending against them. The Madukkarai police are thoroughly investigating the reason for the gang to extort money from the businessmen.
