Coimbatore: The maternal grandparents of the minor girl who fell prey to 'honour-killing' in Mettupalayam, petitioned the District Collector staking their claim as the rightful legal heirs of the deceased girl. They sought part of the solatium money that was extended to the family.

In a gruesome honour-killing incident on June 25 in Mettupalayam, Vinoth hacked his brother Kanakaraj and his 16-year-old, lover. Kanakaraj died on the spot, while the girl succumbed to her grievous injuries at the Coimbatore Government Hospital, a couple of days later.

N Murugan from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes visited the bereaved family and handed over Rs. 4.12 lakhs to Amudha, the mother of the girl.

Meanwhile, the girl's maternal grandparents arrived at the Collectorate today and petitioned the District Collector saying Ranganathan, who was Amudha's husband had divorced her in 2008 and since then they had been taking care of the girl.

The elderly couple have also procured signatures as a testimony of their claim from the people in the neighborhood.

Responding to their plea, the District Collector, K Rajamani promised to look into the matter after scrutinizing the petition.
