Coimbatore: Sri Krishna Sweets, Coimbatore and AROGYA Siddha Hospital jointly organized 'Nalandana – Nalam Nam Kayil' a third-year inaugural event of health tips from a doctoral dissertation at Sarojini Natarajan Auditorium in Kikani Higher Secondary School, R S Puram.

The doctoral dissertation that commenced on July 1 will continue till July 7, with various renowned doctors from the medical field scheduled to speak on the importance of Allopathic and Integrated Medicine for a healthy mind and body.

Dr. S Raja Sabapathy, Director, Plastic Hand and Microsurgery, Ganga Hospital inaugurated the event on July 1 and delivered the presidential address.

"Awareness of medicinal facts in India is limited, compared to foreign countries. Awareness and knowledge about diseases is a must to prevent us from getting infected with the curable ones," he stressed. "Organising programs like 'Nalandana' is a must for civic conditions. Absence of basic awareness about diseases and accidents is a pathetic scenario in the growing population. One should not panic if one unfortunately meet with a fire accident and must have the presence of mind to quickly put it out. Everyone should be aware of such basic tips and information on any disease or accidents," reiterated Dr. S Raja Sabapathy.

Dr. S Raja Sundaram, Oncologist shed light on the topic 'Let’s Succeed Cancer.

"There is a strong misconception among the public that cancer is a deadly disease and it is incurable. There is also a belief that medication for cancer is pathetic and horrible. People have to come out of such illusions since medication for cancers has advanced with the help of technological growth. Many people have identified cancer at an early stage, cured it through medication and are leading happy lives. One has to be positive and face cancer diligently instead of panicking or feeling anxious or nervous," he stressed.

Dr. S Raja Sundaram also advised that one should approach a doctor in case one identifies changes in body functions. "Most women hide such changes out of family situations or embarrassment. Women tend to approach doctors and ask for medical help or medication only when they cannot tolerate pain any longer. But medication at an early stage is a wise choice. Cancer can accumulate in any part of our bodies, except hair and nail," he noted. He stressed that women above 40 years need to compulsorily do a mammogram. He also pointed out saying that expenses for testing is minimal compared to expenditure for a weekend family meal at a restaurant.

Dr. S Raja Sundaram elucidated that medical procedures for cancers are in place, which includes surgeries, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and integrated medicine. "Various modern techniques of chemotherapy are practised widely. Loss of hair is just temporary and can be re-grown. Research states that 50 percent of cancer is due to smoking and alcohol. Environmental conditions like usage of plastics, improper food habits and pollution are added factors. Cancer patients will feel severe stress and it is the unconditional love and support by family members and friends that will heal them fast," he added.

The Oncologist also advised a more balanced lifestyle with exercise, good eating habits and breathing exercises to prevent one from cancer. He also added that cancer is easily curable compared to other diseases and people should get rid of the fear about cancer.

Dr. Ku Sivaraman, the Managing Director and Chief Siddha Physician, AROGYA Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. spoke about the developments in integrated medicines.

"Ramachandra University has opened a Department of Integrated Medicine and such developmental transformations are the need of the hour. We should appreciate and welcome that the discussion on various medical systems, including Allopathy, Unani, Homeopathy, Siddha and Ayurveda for basic medication happens only in 'Nalandana' organized in Coimbatore," he said.

Dr. Ku Sivaraman also said that awareness needs to created on various diseases. "Even educated employed women lack awareness about the self-examination of breasts. One can learn the basic self-examination through an online platform like Google. Awareness about the disease would help prevent breast cancer or arrest it from spreading to other parts of the body. Prevention is always better than cure," he stressed.
