Coimbatore: Over 100 residential complexes and shops which were built by encroaching on lands belonging to the Coimbatore Corporation in Masjid Colony in Ukkadam were demolished on Thursday.
The City Corporation's encroachment drive aims to reclaim all lands belonging to the Corporation across all 100 wards in the city. In one such drive, the encroachments along Masjid Colony here were demolished today.
JCBs were pressed into service to demolish the hutments and houses that were built illegally on the land owned by the City Corporation.
Even after being provided with alternate housing, residents of Masjid Colony were stubborn about not vacating their homes claiming that they had been living there for over 100 years.
Since the residents showed no signs of relocating to the alternate residences allotted to them by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance board, upon orders from the Corporation Commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavath, the Corporation officials went ahead and demolished the buildings.
Even as poclain machines demolished the houses, the sight of both men and women wailing as their homes were being razed to the ground was heart-rending.
