Coimbatore: The Kumki elephant camp at the Sadivayal hamlet in the Boluvampati Forest Range is all set to host two new elephants as Kumkis Cheran and John are leaving for for Mudumalai after a stay of more than a year.
Coimbatore: The Kumki elephant camp at the Sadivayal hamlet in the Boluvampati Forest Range is all set to host two new elephants as Kumkis Cheran and John are leaving for for Mudumalai after a stay of more than a year.
Of the two, John was taken to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) around 12.30Am on Thursday and Cheran is to follow him to the Theppakadu elephant camp in MTR the following day, according to officials.
The duo arrived to Coimbatore on 3rd of April 2018, replacing Pari and Sujay who were taken to the camps Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) and MTR respectively.
Since arrived, they were involved in two major elephant shifting operations including the captured of Chinnathambi and Vinayagan. However, 27-year-old John could not be utilised to his full potential in both the operations since he turned aggressive often.
He was taken out of the makeshift elephant camp from the Thadagam valley and was stationed at Sadivayal for the larger part of his stay in Coimbatore.
32-year-old Cheran on the other hand was helpful in both the operations and was used to his strengths.
However, Cheran developed health issues including Cataract problem on the right eye and was also injured by a wild elephant in March earlier making it difficult for the officials to make any more use of them. Hence, it was decided to replace them.
The Kumki duo is to be replaced by Suyambu and Venkatesh, both from the Kozhikamuthi elephant camp in ATR.
Notably, the Sadivayal Kumki elephant camp was set up in 2012 to control Human Elephant Conflict in the conflict driven Coimbatore landscape. Kumki elephants including Pari, Sujay and Nanjan.
