The Supreme Court which has decided to make available its judgments in six Indian languages ignored the Tamil language which is one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world. According to the new arrangement, SC judgments will be translated into six regional languages including Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Odia and Assamese, and would be uploaded to the official SC website to enable litigants to know the status of the case without depending on lawyers for this purpose. Thus far it was done only in the English language. The in- house electronic wing of the SC has developed the software which was cleared by the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, recently.
The DMK expressed its disappointment over the non-inclusion of Tamil as one of the regional languages to publish judgments of the Supreme Court and urged the Chief Justice of India to include Tamil to pave way for multilingual equality. Expressing his disappointment over the non-inclusion of the Tamil language in the new arrangement, M K Stalin, DMK Chief said, "It is highly disappointing that the Tamil language has not been included to avail the new facility by which judgments would be made available in regional languages." While choosing to call the step as a ‘mile stone’ in the annals of the Indian judicial system and history, the DMK President opined that this measure would greatly help the non-English speaking population of India. In his statement, M K Stalin has fervently appealed to the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi to also include the Tamil language in the list .
PMK Founder and leader Ramadoss has also expressed his disappointment by saying that that the world’s oldest language has been given a raw deal by the decision of the Apex court. While urging the SC to include Tamil in the new judicial delivery arrangement, he said that the SC could get the technical assistance and infrastructure from the Tamil Nadu Government to achieve this end.
