Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Police hosted a meeting with all the Islamic movements in the city, at the PVG Marriage Hall in Podanur.
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Police hosted a meeting with all the Islamic movements in the city, at the PVG Marriage Hall in Podanur.
The meeting was held in the presence of the Corporation Commissioner, DC, SIC and AC. Various incidents that occurred in Coimbatore and their impact on Coimbatoreans and the recent NIA raids in Tamil Nadu, especially the NIA and police raids in Coimbatore among the Muslim community were discussed at the meeting. The Police Department urged the Jamaat movements to identify and tip-off on youths who looked suspicious to them as well as those who share and comment with unwanted posts on social media.
Following this, various executives from the Islamic movements shared their opinions and concerns. The Coimbatore Executives of the Popular Front of India opined that the current unpleasant situation in Coimbatore is a result of the Indian Government's regime. The authorities also mentioned that they strictly condemn the actions of the NIA for portraying Muslim communities as criminals and connecting the community as a whole with ISIS. They also accused the activities of NIA as biased and mentioned various instances when those who confessed to their role in the Malegaon blasts had been released. The representatives of the Popular Front of India also claimed that the police and media make it a nation-wide issue when Islamist terrorism is exposed but when the accused is not found guilty and if the allegations are not proven, then they do not report the same to the outside world.
Earlier, the TMMK representatives suggested that the Police Department should hold these meetings with both the Jammat movements and the Hindu movements instead of separately, to foster unity in the city. The Jammat movement representatives reiterated that they would continue to support the Coimbatore Police Department since they were more trustworthy than the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The INTJ executives highlighted an untoward incident that had happened in Coimbatore which was known to the Police as well as the Intelligence Department which could have been prevented if they had wanted to intervene.
They assured that even now when anything could take place in Coimbatore which the Police Department would be aware of, their Movement would accept if the Police arrested the true culprits but would not accept false allegations. The JIH executives reiterated that any terrorist could not belong to true Islam or Islamic Movements.
The executives from JAQH and TNTJ also registered their opinions. The SDPI executives questioned the timing of arrests or investigations by the Police. They felt that since the Police already knew the movements and whereabouts of some men in the community who were under Police surveillance, why were they not arrested during the day but were investigated and arrested either during early morning hours or late nights, thus disturbing members of the family and creating a great deal of fear in the neighbourhood and amidst the Muslim community.
The Muslim community felt that when people watch these arrests through the media, a resurgence of hatred toward the Muslim community arises and hence requested the police to consider their point of view and sentiments.
