Aruvankadu Cordite Factory worker succumbs to burn injuries from explosion on June 29 at factory

The Nilgiris: On June 29, an explosion occurred in one section of the Aruvankadu Cordite Factory which is located midway between Ooty and Coonoor.

The Nilgiris: On June 29, an explosion occurred in one section of the Aruvankadu Cordite Factory which is located midway between Ooty and Coonoor. 



It is reported that the explosion was due to high pressure in one section of the factory. Three factory employees, Suraj Kumar, Robin and Sarguna Murali were severely injured and admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore for treatment. Suraj Kumar succumbed to his injuries and passed away today, at the Coimbatore hospital, leaving behind his family and colleagues in shock and grief. 



The Cordite Factory in Aruvankadu is one of the oldest defence factories, under the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Ordinance Factories. It was established in 1903 by the then British Government on a huge campus and still caters to the Defence Services by manufacturing cordite, an antiquated type of smokeless propellant, which is used in manufacturing small arms ammunition and also as a propellant in various tanks.
