Coimbatore: A woman who met with an accident,on the Mettupalayam-Karamdai road died while being treated at the Mettupalayam Government Hospital. Relatives of the couple blamed the hospital for medical negligence and assaulted the doctor and nurse on duty and looted the hospital, creating an uproar in the area.

Rajan and his wife Rukmani (37) are residents of Kuttaiyur in Mettupalayam who were on their way back home from a temple in MTP when their vehicle collided with a lorry near Abirami Theatre on the MTP-Karamadai road. The public rushed both of them to the Mettupalayam Government Hospital with the aid of 108 ambulance at about 5.30 pm, last evening. The doctors who examined Rukmani reportedly sent her to a private hospital at Annur by 7.30 pm for a scan, but announced that she was dead by 8.30 pm. Enraged relatives assaulted Dr. Lakshmanan and a nurse who were on duty at that time, looted the hospital and also staged a road roko on the Ooty main road.

Upon receiving information of the road roko, the MTP police rushed to the spot and tried to calm down the protesters. The enraged kin had reportedly thrown out medicines in the emergency unit at the MTP GH. Chief Doctor of MTP GH, Dr. Cheralathan registered a complaint at the MTP police station regarding the attack on the duty doctor and nurse. Also, medical staff at the GH urged the police to set up a police outpost station at the hospital. Police are investigating the case, while the kin of the deceased are protesting at the hospital, claiming the hospital to be dysfunctional.
