Pollachi farm owner alleged of casteist slurs; assaults man for questioning him

Coimbatore: The violent attack triggered by caste bias on the leader of Makkal Viduthalai Munnani by the landlord of a farm in Pollachi has shocked workers on the farm as well as people in the district.

Coimbatore: In another incident of alleged caste-based violence, a member of Makkal Viduthalai Munnani was brutally attacked by a land owner in Pollachi.

Parvatha Kannan owns a farm 'Muthusamy Farm' at Karuppampalayam, near Pollachi. On Monday, he noticed a farm worker smoking in his garden during lunch break. The act infuriated Parvatha Kannan who allegedly abused the worker using casteist slurs for daring to smoke in front of him.

On hearing about the altercation, Selvam, the leader of Makkal Viduthalai Munnani went to the rescue of the worker and questioned Parvatha Kannan about his high-handed behaviour.

Parvatha Kannan got further infuriated and abused Selvam too based on his caste and violently assaulted him with a coconut shell.

It is also alleged that Parvatha Kannan's relative, Nachimuthu who was standing nearby, reportedly handed iron rods to Parvatha Kannan to hit Selvam.

Selvam sustained grievous injuries to his head and arm. The labourers at the farm immediately rushed him to Pollachi Govt Hospital. He was later shifted to an Ortho hospital for further treatment.

Condemning the brutal act perpetrated by caste bias, the farm workers demanded immediate action against Parvatha Kannan, his wife and his relative Nachimuthu. They also urged the authorities to arrest them under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, on charges of attempt to murder.
