Coimbatore: The police released over 200 protesters last night who had been arrested for staging a protest against the Corporation, in front of the Vadavalli bus stand for irregular water supply. The protesters comprised of women and aides of the Secular Democratic Front which included the DMK, CPI (M) and Congress parties.

The protest was led by the former President of the Vadavalli Panchayat and DMK party in-charge of P N Pudur area, V M Shanmugasundaram.
The cadres of the Secular Democratic Front protested against the Corporation for irregular water supply and raised slogans against the Minister of Municipal Administration and RDI, S P Velumani, demanding his resignation. They accused the State Government of not taking necessary measures to find a solution for the water scarcity crisis prevailing in the State.
The protesters slammed the Corporation for stating that the Vadavalli area had been blessed with sufficient water supply when in reality the water was being sold to the manufacturers of bottled waters and not distributed to residents. It is to be noted that Vadavalli was earlier supplied with drinking water once in 4 days, but of late, water was being supplied only once in 15 days. The women protesters carried empty pots to highlight their woes of having to pay for drinking water. Since the protest had no prior permission from the police, the protesters were arrested and taken to a private marriage hall near Marudhamalai, and then released last night.
