The Nilgiris: Though the Southwest monsoon has been sluggish, the intermittent rains has resulted in copious harvest of Jack fruits across the Coonoor to Burliyar slopes and in Kunjapanai on Kotagiri road.

The lingering smell from the fruit invites wild elephant which feed on the fruits by blocking the road. The movement of elephants with calves pose threat to the motorist travelling through MTP-Coonoor road and the vendors at Burliyar.

"Of late, the herd with calves frequently venture on Burliyar to Coonoor road. They not hinder traffic but at times, they turn aggressive and chase motorists. Often, they vandalise fruit shops and hotels in Burliyar.

With Jack fruit season picking up, the forest department should deploy a special team stationed at Burliyar to chase the elephants", suggested a fruit stall vendor at Burliyar.
