Minister announces forest fund allocations for State, Coimbatore HEC gets focus

In the eight point agenda, as much as Rs. 7.24 crore were allotted for setting up a special monitoring centre in Coimbatore, to know the movement of elephants outside reserve forests.

The centre would have controls of long distance thermal sensor cameras and camera traps placed at the edge of reserve forests, to monitor elephants that venture out.

“In the last two years, 20 people have been killed by elephants and 17 have been injured. In order to control such conflicts and provide more safety to people and the staff involved, such updations are made,” the announcement from the Minister read.

Claiming that elephants were straying out of the reserve often in Coimbatore causing damage to crops and houses, the announcement also assured that the new technology would reduce the work pressure of forest field staff.

The department has also allotted Rs. 15.74 crore to construct new hostels, laboratories, computer rooms, updated classrooms and museums at the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy campuses in Coimbatore and Vaigai in Madurai.

A solar powered green forest college with 25 rooms is also to be set up at Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai at a cost of Rs. 8.25 crores, to help research in wildlife.

Further, a solar powered Sea Turtle Conservation Centre is also to be set up at a cost of Rs. 2 crores at Nagapattinam near Kodiyakarai Wildlife Sanctuary, to create awareness about sea turtles.

As much as Rs. 30 crores has been allotted for three years for the renovation of forest quarters all over Tamil Nadu. According to the announcement, of the 2540 residences, more than 50 per cent need major renovations including water, electricity and toilet facilities.

CCTV cameras are to be installed at forest check posts and saw mills controlled by the department to check on illegal tree smuggling and controlling the attack on foresters by miscreants.

The medicinal plants gardens at Thandarai and Pulleri in Kanchipuram are to be renovated at a cost of Rs. 3.34 crores in three years. A biodiversity park is to come up at Sirumalai in Dindigul at a cost of Rs. 5 crores.
