Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Arts and Literature Association petitioned the District Collector today stating that ancient cave paintings which were 3500 years old and discovered from the Kumitipathi, Ponparappi and Vettaikaran mountains in Coimbatore district were not being preserved properly.
Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Arts and Literature Association petitioned the District Collector today stating that ancient cave paintings which were 3500 years old and discovered from the Kumitipathi, Ponparappi and Vettaikaran mountains in Coimbatore district were not being preserved properly.
The petition stated that a few who visit the caves strew liquor bottles around and also inscribe their names on the paintings using charcoal, thus marring them. The petition further stated that when the issue of not preserving the ancient paintings was taken to the Archaeological Department, the reason for neglect was cited as insufficient funds to carry out maintenance work.
The petitioners demanded for allocation of necessary funds and also urged for wired fences to be put up which could be monitored by CCTV and security guards, to ensure the ancient paintings were preserved.
