Coimbatore: The special team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order), Balaji Saravanan busted an illegal lottery racket in the city on Saturday.
As a part of the recent crackdown on the illegal sale of lottery sales in the city, the city police arrested two people in connection with the same.
Based on repeated tip-offs on illegal lottery sales in the city especially No:3 and No:1 lottery, a special police team was formed to nab the culprits who create havoc in the lives of daily wage earners, who many times sink all their earnings into the illegal activity to try their luck out, thereby leaving their families in lurch.
Though lottery is legal in many states including Kerala, in Tamil Nadu lottery has been banned. Despite the ban, there are several cases of illegal sale of lotteries in Coimbatore due to the City's proximity to Kerala where lottery is permissible.
In a bid to annihilate illegal lottery sales in the city, the city police have been striving hard to track the network. Through surveillance, the special team received a tip-off on two main agents dealing in lottery in Sastha Nagar in Selvapuram. With the help of Selvapuram police, a plan was derived to nab the offenders.
