Coimbatore: With traffic violations increasing every day, the city police have come up with a novel idea to bring down traffic violations and transparency in the system.
Coimbatore City along with places within the jurisdiction of the West Zone were given point of sale (POS) machines (card swipe machines) on Friday.
Traffic violations like over speeding, drunk driving, driving without helmets, cellphone use while driving, overload in goods carrier, carrying passengers in goods carriers and not fastening seat belts are some of the offences booked by the city police. With the introduction of swiping machines, the traffic violators can now pay fine using credit/debit cards.
The machines were distributed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police - Coimbatore Range, G. Karthikeyan who distributed 119 machines to the west zone, out of the 750 swipe machines in total.
32 swipe machines were given to Coimbatore City police, 14 for Coimbatore district, 4 for Tirupur City, 30 for Erode district, 12 for the Nilgiris district and 32 for Tirupur districts. Hereon, the traffic violators can pay their penalty online by visiting the web site https://e-challan.parivahan.gov.in.
