The girl who sustained grievous injuries to her head and right eye was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit in GH. Not responding to treatment, she succumbed to injuries on Friday night. Her body has been sent for post mortem.
Presently, the girl's relatives have gathered in large numbers at the GH who bursted out in tears condemning the barbaric act of honour killing incident which has claimed the lives of two youngsters.
Vinothkumar (24), a resident of Vellipalayam near Mettupalayam surrendered before the police on Wednesday, a day after he hacked to death his younger brother, Kanagaraj (22) in an alleged act of 'honour' killing and grievously injured his brother's lover, a 16-year-old Dalit girl who belongs to a scheduled caste.
Ever since Vinodhkumar who belongs to Valayar Caste (Most backward caste) came to know about his brother's relationship with a scheduled caste girl, he warned him to part ways with the girl.
A few days ago, Kanagaraj told his father about the affair who advised him to rent a house until his elder brother cools down.
It is reported that both Kanagaraj and the girl were living together in a house in Sri Rangarayan Odai on Vellipalayam in MTP, for the past 3-4 days. Vinodhkumar who came to know about their living together stormed into their house and hacked them both with a sickle.
Kanagaraj died on the spot while the girl was rushed to Mettupalayam government hospital for treatment. Later she was shifted to Coimbatore GH.
Meanwhile, Vinodhkumar surrendered to the police on Wednesday and was booked for murder, attempt to murder and also under the provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.(24).
The girl's mother wrote to the State human rights commission seeking to book the culprits under the goondas Act. She subsequently submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector, K. Rajamani seeking protection for her and her family.
The State Human rights commission also has sought explanation on the increasing honour killing incidents in the Western Tamil Nadu.
