The Nilgiris: Over the past few days, a herd of wild elephants has been wreaking havoc at Nilakottai area in Gudalur.

Residents of Nilakottai allege that a herd of elephants along with their calves have been frequently venturing into farmlands and tea estates and engage in rampaging crops.

Today, a lone tusker on Nilakottai-Gudalur road chased motorists and created panic among the people. The tea estate workers ran hither and thither to escape the sight of the tusker.
The estate workers also point that the lone tusker has now camped in a tea estate in the same area sparking fear among the workers.

"Elephants have been causing destruction every year. The forest department should devise plans to chase them off into deep forest", urged the estate workers who also pointed at the increasing deaths due to man-animal conflict in their area.
