The program marks the 'International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking' being observed across the world today. R Vincent, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Narcotics Intelligence Bureau - Crime Investigation Department, Coimbatore is to address the students and preside over the program.
The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed worldwide every year on June 26, to fight against substance abuse as well as illicit drug trade. Drug abuse or addiction is a psychiatric, social and psychological problem that not only affects the youth of the entire world but also various age groups.
According to reports from the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre (NDDTC) of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, over 3.1 crore Indians (2.8%) have indicated using Cannabis products, Bhang, Ganja, Charas, Heroin and Opium in the past one year. Unfortunately, only one in 20 drug addicts get treated in a hospital. NCRB reported that in Tamil Nadu, 422 suicides were reported due to drug abuse and alcohol addiction, out of which 97.39 % (411) were male, and 2.61% (11) were female.
