3Coimbatore : In an apparent instance of honour killing in Mettupalayam, a man who killed his brother for loving a girl from SC community surrendered at the Mettupalayam police station today morning.

The police have booked Vinod Kumar (24) under four sections including sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC.

According to reports, Vinod Kumar (24) and Kanagaraj (22) sons of Karuppsamy have been living in Mettupalayam (MTP) in a village near Sri Rangarayan Odai area. Kanagaraj has been been working as a daily labourer at the Potato wholesale Mandi in MTP.

Over the past two years, Kanagaraj has been in love with Varshini Priya (17) of the same area. Kanagaraj belongs to Valayar community (MBC) and the girl belongs to Arundhadhiyar Community (SC).

Citing the caste of the girl, Kanagaraj's elder brother Vinod Kumar frequently tussled over the issue and warned him to forego his relationship with the Dalit girl.

It is also reported that the lovers eloped from their house sometime back and after stiff opposition from their parents, the couple returned to their houses and continued to be in the relationship.

In this scenario, Kanagaraj's father Karuppusamy consented to his son's proposal and promised to get them married.

Recently, the minor girl again came out of her house and Kanagaraj took her to his father who reportedly has made them stay at a rented home in Vellipalayam near Sri Rangarayan Odai in MTP.

He asked the lovers to stay low and promised to get them married once the situation cools down.

Over the past three days, both Varshini and Kanagaraj have been staying in the house in Vellipalayam. Vinod Kumar who came to know about his father's plans to get them married rushed to the home with the intent of separating them.

The brothers entered into a heated argument which led to a scuffle. Unexpectedly, Vinod Kumar stabbed his brother Kanagaraj with a knife he hid under his shirt. He stabbed his brother multiple times and killed him on the spot.

An angered Vinod Kumar later attacked Varshini in her head and right eye and escaped from the scene. The neighbours rescued her and sent her to Mettupalayam GH for treatment and later was shifted to Coimbatore GH.

Armed reserve police were deployed in the area to avoid any caste flare-ups. The police filed a case and were on the lookout for Vinod Kumar. Sujit Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore district, also visited the crime scene.

Meanwhile, the accused Vinod Kumar surrendered at Mettupalayam police station today morning.

The girl is said to be out of danger and she is being treated at the intensive care unit for her head injuries.
