Kanagaraj and Varshini Priya hailing from different caste backgrounds were in love with each other. The boy's family who belong to Valayar community, an MBC caste was allegedly against their love affair. And, the girl belongs to SC, Arundhadhiyar community.
According to sources, when the couple were talking to each other in Mettupalayam, the boy's brother Kanagaraj assaulted the couple, allegedly along with two of his friends. While Kanagaraj died on the spot, Varshini sustained severe injuries.
According to sources, Kanagaraj's brother plotted to kill the girl due to her caste. During his attempt to murder her, his brother Kanagaraj tried to protect her and sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.
The onlookers rescued Varshini and sent her to Mettupalayam GH for treatment. She was later shifted to Coimbatore GH.
The Mettupalayam police have registered a case and are investigating. The mortal remains of Kangaraj has been brought to Coimbatore GH for postmortem.
The accused is reported to have absconded.
