Coimbatore: The inauguration of the six-acre Government Arts College costing eight crores, purely for the benefit of students from economically poor backgrounds in the Mettupalayam region, near the Matheshwaran foothills was held today.

But marring the proceedings was a protest by the DMK cadres who claimed that MP A Raja was not invited. The DMK members raised slogans against the ADMK Government, causing a lot of commotion at the inaugural ceremony.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami inaugurated the Government Arts College through video conferencing. The project began in 2018 and was completed a month prior to the estimated completion date. The college has three floors comprising of 36 rooms which include classrooms, rooms for Principal and teaching stafff, labs, library, canteen and toilets.
MLA O K Chinnaraja and Principal Sornalatha inaugurated the college by lighting a lamp. The DMK members present at the event rose in protest asking why their MP was not invited to the inauguration. Over 50 DMK members raised questions asking for an explanation from the Social Welfare Authority and the Principal. They also claimed that the ADMK who had lost their vote banks were wilfully disrespecting elected candidates. They also warned the ADMK government that they will stage a massive protest if due respect was not given to their elected members. The police had to intervene at the college venue to disperse the irate DMK cadres.
