Coimbatore: Oblivious to the water crisis plaguing the State, highway workers who were busily extending the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam highway in a section at Teacher's Colony near Karamadai were operating a JCB which accidentally broke a huge drinking water pipe, leading to several lakh litres of water going down the drain.
Coimbatore: Oblivious to the water crisis plaguing the State, highway workers who were busily extending the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam highway in a section at Teacher's Colony near Karamadai were operating a JCB which accidentally broke a huge drinking water pipe, leading to several lakh litres of water going down the drain.
It is reported that even after three hours of the incident, officials failed to take notice of the water wastage. Water supply in the area was shut down only after the public consistently registered their complaints to the officials.
When asked about the incident, officials said that Panchayat workers were in the process of fixing the broken pipe and assured that necessary steps would be taken to continue supplying water to the public without causing any inconvenience.
Water from the River Bhavani in Mettupalayam is treated and then distributed to Karamadai, Mettupalayam and nearby villages. A separate Water Dispensing Station has been constructed at Thekkampatti for the Karamadai Panchayat from where water is distributed to the neighbouring wards, through huge pipes.
