The Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) scheme in Tamil Nadu is an initiative of the late ex-Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. It was launched in the year 2001 in a bid to rejuvenate water resources and improve groundwater levels in the parched Southern state. Tamil Nadu was one of the first States to make the RWH Scheme mandatory. Jayalalithaa's Government made it compulsory for all residential, commercial and Government buildings.
Following her footsteps, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu ordered for proper maintenance of the RWH framework in residents, offices and Government buildings. S P Velumani, the Minister for Municipal Administration and RDI also ordered officials to inspect all the residential and commercial buildings of the Corporations, Panchayats, Municipalities and Rural areas to check the RWH scheme framework as well as to create awareness and urge members of the public to build RWH framework in their buildings.
Following this, the Chennai Metro Corporation Commissioner, K Prakash visited the residential areas on Ranjith Road in the Adayar region over the weekend to inspect the RWH framework and handed over leaflets on awareness of Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) to the public. Addressing the media, he said, "Based on the orders from CM of Tamil Nadu and Minister S P Velumani, a team of Asst. Corporation Commissioners, Regional Officers, Executive Engineers and Corporation officers will be inspecting Chennai city hereon." He also said that Chennai Corporation, along with Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board had distributed about 10 lakh pamphlets to the public on RWH awareness. He then spoke to the public on how small changes in day-to-day life can save water and how one can construct rainwater harvesting framework and maintain it.
The Chennai Metro Corporation Commissioner, K Prakash was accompanied by the Corporation Superintending Engineer (special projects) S Rajendran, the Chief Engineer of Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board and Arumugam, Regional Officer, Executive Engineer and others.
