Coimbatore: In what is a much awaited good news, Minister SP Velumani had given a clear indication about the status of the land acquisition for the Coimbatore airport expansion activity.
Coimbatore: In what is a much awaited good news, Minister SP Velumani had given a clear indication about the status of the land acquisition for the Coimbatore airport expansion activity.
Talking about Coimbatore and industrial developments in the district, Minister S.P. Velumani said "As far as airport expansion is concerned, 75 crores has been already been disbursed to the land owners in the first phase. Despite opposition from other States, the airport expansion will go as per plan. The airport expansion will aid the industrial growth of Coimbatore and neighbouring districts."
He was addressing "A session on Ease of Doing Business in Tamil Nadu - A Leap Forward" with industrialists which was organised by CII.
The total land of 657 acres has been outlined for Coimbatore International Airport Expansion. In this, 140 acres is with the Airforce, 30 acres is poramboke land, and the balance 487 acres is to acquired from private owners. These 657 acres are located in 24 blocks in 5 villages around the current International Airport.
The Rs. 75 crores disbursement that the Minister refers to could possibly be the settlement amount for block 7 which comprises of 68 land owners. In March 2019, 13 land owners, who agreed to give their lands for acquisition were compensated Rs. 1.6 crores by Minister SP Velumani in the presence of the District Collector K Rajamani.
The finally agreed price for the land to be acquired is fixed at Rs. 1500 per sq feet for residential plots and Rs. 900 per sq ft for agricultural lands.
Industrial Growth
Added to this airport expansion, "The Defence corridor which includes Coimbatore will boost industrial growth in the district. A 1000 acre defence park is coming up near Sulur and will become a major hub for military equipment manufacturing. MSMEs will enjoy maximum benefit in this project."
Earlier, senior member of CODISSIA and Industrialist, A.V. Varadharajan outlined the issues faced by the industries in the region. "Coimbatore International airport expansion and non-availability of prior intimation about areas where industries can be built in rural belts is a major concern", he pointed. He along with CODISSIA President R. Ramamurthy presented the demands of the industry to the Minister for Industries, Sampath.
