Tribunal to be held in Coonoor to decide on SIMI ban

The Nilgiris: The Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) that was formed in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh in 1977 was banned by the Central Government in 2002 as a terrorist movement.

The Nilgiris: The Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) that was formed in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh in 1977 was banned by the Central Government in 2002 as a terrorist movement. 

In this scenario, the High Court Justice Mukhta Gupta is to preside over a session of Illegal Activities Prevention Tribunal in Nilgiris to decide whether to lift the ban or continue the ban on SIMI. The Tribunal will be held from June 22 to 24 for three days at the Coonoor Municipal Office.

The District Collector, Innocent Divya stated that those who wished to testify in this regard could appear before the Tribunal. It is to be noted that the investigation on the SIMI ban had been held in Coonoor, three years ago. At the investigation to be held tomorrow, the Central Government prosecutors from Delhi and attorneys from Coimbatore and Coonoor will appear on behalf of the Hindu Front. 

The stated mission of SIMI is the "liberation of India" from Western materialistic cultural influence and to convert its Muslim society to live according to the Muslim code of conduct.
