The Nilgiris : In the milling crowd of Nilgiris' summer season, the five-day Flower Show annually held at the Government Botanical Garden in Ooty had 18 special guards on duty this year.
These were actually social workers who chose to serve voluntarily. Though the local administration and police department had beefed up security to avoid commotion and prevent traffic snarls, these 18 volunteers untiringly helped authorities to keep the crowd in check at the Botanical Garden as well as direct traffic in highly-congested areas in the district.
The Nilgiris Superintendent of Police, Shanmugapriya presented certificates of appreciation to all the 18 volunteers and encouraged participation of more volunteers to come forward in helping the police to maintain law and order, especially during tourist seasons.
