The dam's water is sourced by rains, streams and waterfalls. In spite of the onset of monsoon, Kerala and Nilgiris received very minimal rainfall which in turn has severely affected the water levels in Pillur Dam. Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur benefit most from Pillur Dam.
But with steadily decreasing water levels in Pillur Dam, a severe water crisis is expected in the region which has already caused panic among residents. The Pillur Dam has a water level capacity of 100 feet. Presently, there is just 75 feet of water but about 40 feet of that is slurry and only 35 feet of water can be used. This is a dangerously low level and it is expected that if the monsoon fails, alarm bells of water scarcity will sound in Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur.
