Coimbatore : Prakash (57) from Sekkilar Street in Karungalpalayam Erode was arrested on March 23 having been accused of crimes against women.
He was detained in the city prison for investigation where he reportedly swallowed powdered glass in an attempt to commit suicide. Prison officials immediately admitted him for treatment in the intensive care unit of a hospital and on seeing improvement, the accused was moved to the Prisoners' Ward with continued medical attention. Meanwhile, an investigation has been ordered as to how the prisoner procured powdered glass.
It has been reportedly found that a Vigilance Officer is not present in the Central Prison. A Vigilance Officer normally works alongside the Prison Sub-Inspector. But it has been found out that now the work of the Vigilance Officer is being done by Prison Wardens, which has come to light only after the attempted suicide incident was reported.
