Coimbatore: Acting upon the requests from CCMC, the TNEB has disconnected the electricity connections to Jeeva Nagar in Kavundampalayam on Tuesday.
The officials resorted to this stern action after a few residents refused to vacate the encroached houses, even after the TN Slum Clearance board allotted houses in Keeranatham here.
Amidst stiff opposition, CCMC commenced the demolition drive on June 4. The forced eviction was carried after the dismissal of a petition filed by the residents in the High court in February. In the petition, the residents of Jeeva Nagar requested additional time to vacate and the court dismissed the petition.
Speaking on the issue Deputy Commissioner Prasanna Ramasamy said, "CCMC had to follow the High court orders or else it will amount to contempt of court. Enough time was accorded to the residents of Jeeva Nagar to vacate and alternate housing at Keeranatham by the Tamil Nadu slum clearance board was also granted."
"Though 130 of them have vacated the houses, a remaining of 100 plus houses are yet to be vacated. CCMC had to resort to forced eviction and termination of EB connections. Though we do understand the implications the residents have to face but its CCMC has to abide by the High Court's order", the Deputy Commissioner noted.
The High court dismissed the petition of the residents of Jeeva Nagar, following a writ petition filed by KK Nagar residents Welfare association. The petitioners have pointed that the encroachments in Jeeva Nagar has led to severe traffic congestion which has been proving to be a hindrance even for emergency services like ambulance.
However, the residents of Jeeva Nagar lament that shifting base to Keeranatham which is in the outskirts of the city will affect their livelihood largely, especially school-going children.
