Coimbatore : Coimbatore Corporation Contractors' Welfare Association have filed a petition to the Special Secretary of Tamil Nadu seeking to control the increasing price of cement.
The petition stated that the cement price had increased up to 11.7 percent with Rs.340 per bag in January to Rs.380 per bag in February, which was an increase of 11.7 percent. "The price hike has affected the construction industry and government contractors. A cement bag costs about Rs.330 in neighboring states, including Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Though the price of raw materials for cement remains same, the cement price has been increasing every month and it increases the expenditure of the construction industry by 5 to 8 percent. As nearly 1.2 crore workers rely on the construction sector, the price hike has affected them widely," noted the petition.
