Parents Allege Safety Issues at Coimbatore School Amid Incomplete Interior Works

Coimbatore: More than 100 parents staged a protest at The Akshaya Academy Campus CBSE School in Pannimadai near Thudiyalur on Tuesday, alleging that classes were being conducted in a building where interior and other works had not been fully completed.

The protest was triggered after a piece of false ceiling reportedly dislodged inside the building. No one was injured in the incident, parents said. They alleged that the school had continued to accommodate students in classrooms despite concerns being raised over their safety while interior and construction-related works were still underway.

According to the parents, they had staged a protest at the school about a week earlier after learning that kindergarten students were being accommodated in the unfinished building. Following the intervention of Thadagam police, the school management had reportedly assured them that the students would be shifted back to the existing campus and that the pending works would be completed within three days.

However, parents alleged that students from Classes IX to XII were subsequently accommodated in the same building despite the works remaining incomplete.

During Tuesday’s protest, parents raised concerns over student safety and facilities at the new building. They alleged that the school had failed to honour its earlier assurances and was continuing to conduct classes before the construction and interior works were completed.

They also complained about dust from the ongoing works, damaged tiles, non-functional fans and inadequate toilet facilities.

Following the renewed protest, Thadagam police Inspector Sumathi arrived at the school and held talks with both the parents and the management. She reportedly questioned the school management for not appearing before the police and providing an explanation following the earlier protest.

Inspector Sumathi stressed that student safety should not be compromised under any circumstances and asked the school management to provide a clear timeline to the parents. Until the works were completed, she directed the management to make safe alternative arrangements for conducting classes.

The inspector later inspected the school premises along with the parents and school staff and examined the concerns raised by them.

She instructed the school management to complete all pending works and obtain the required completion certificate within 10 days before resuming classes in the new building. Until then, students were directed to be accommodated in the existing school building.

The school was also asked to convene a meeting with parents and assure them that classrooms used by students were safe and that no construction work would be carried out in areas where classes were being held.

Following the assurances given during the police intervention, the parents dispersed.
