Ooty, Erode and Karur Record Hottest September Days Ever

Coimbatore: Is summer making a comeback? The question is increasingly being raised as Coimbatore district continues to experience hot and humid conditions amid a prolonged break in rainfall, while Ooty, Erode and Karur have recorded unusually high temperatures this September.

For the second consecutive day, Coimbatore district recorded zero rainfall across all its monitoring stations during the 24-hour period ending on the morning of September 8. The dry spell extended even to the usually rain-prone Valparai region and the Pillur and Siruvani catchment areas.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Coimbatore city have remained high over the past week, with the maximum touching around 34°C, adding to the discomfort caused by humid conditions.

The unusual September heat is not limited to Coimbatore. Ooty, one of Tamil Nadu’s most popular hill stations and known for its relatively cool climate, recorded its hottest September day ever at 24.4°C on September 5, according to weather blogger Pradeep John, who highlighted a series of record-breaking temperatures across the State during the first week of the month.

The previous highest September temperature recorded in Ooty was 23.3°C on September 21, 1994, making the latest reading of 24.4°C a new all-time September record, according to data shared by him. Ooty had also recorded a new July temperature record earlier this year.

Trichy and Palayamkottai are among other places in Tamil Nadu witnessing exceptionally high temperatures this September. Meanwhile, Erode and Karur, both part of the Kongu belt, recorded 39.8°C and 39.2°C, respectively, on September 5, setting new all-time September temperature records, according to the data shared by Pradeep John.

Pradeep John said the extended heat over Tamil Nadu needs to be examined alongside broader climatic conditions, including El Niño-related weather patterns. Unlike several other parts of India, where the establishment of the Southwest Monsoon brings significant relief from the summer heat, Tamil Nadu can continue to experience prolonged hot spells well into September.

Online weather data on September 8 showed Coimbatore recording temperatures of around 31°C during the morning, with the maximum expected to touch 34°C. Humidity was reported at around 50%, while rain was forecast as a possibility during the afternoon.

The record-breaking temperatures in Ooty and several other parts of Tamil Nadu have meanwhile added to concerns over the prolonged heat and the broader weather conditions associated with El Niño.
