The Nilgiris: The 133rd Udhagamandalam Horse Racing Season, organised by the Madras Race Club (MRC) kick-started in Ooty, today. Over 500 horses from across India, 50 jockeys and 26 local coaches and 5 out station coaches participate to provide a spectacle of speed and beauty.

The Nilgiris 1000 Guineas Grade-III, The Nilgiris 2000 Guineas Grade-II and The Nilgiris Derby stakes Grade I are the major events of the horse racing season that ends on June 14. Rupa, a former jockey has been roped in to provide special training to all the jockeys. All participants are awarded with prize money, with the total prize money being Rs.6.44 crores.

The Nilgiris Gold Cup is to be held on May 26, and the winner of this race will trot away with a cash prize of Rs.1 crore. The entrance ticket for spectators is priced at Rs.10.
