The Nilgiris: Tourism is picking up in the Nilgiris with footfalls aplenty, over the last three days.

Tamil New Year and Vishu are renowned festivals in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and a large number of tourists are in Ooty since Saturday to celebrate the festival weekend.

"As schools have also declared summer holidays, people along with their families visited the tourist spots in Ooty, especially the Boat House and Botanical Garden which was overflowing with tourists," said an official from the Horticulture Department.

The official also hinted that owing to extreme temperatures in the plains, the tourist footfall could increase considerably in the Nilgiris, this summer. "Compared to last year, there is an overall rise in temperatures throughout the State with even Nilgiris not being spared. Yet, tourists throng this hill station for its pleasant weather, during the evenings and early mornings," he opined.

Tourist inflow is expected to surge till the end of May, with restaurants and shop owners warming up to the brisk seasonal business.
