Elephant kills pilgrim in Poondi, two injured

Coimbatore: In yet another incident of human death by elephants inside reserve forest, a 60-year-old man from Poorandampalayam in the outskirts of the city, was trampled to death by a wild tusker inside the Poondi reserve forest here on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred when the victim Aaruchamy had gone inside the reserve forest to fetch water from the River Noyyal along with nine other pilgrims. It is a customary practice to fetch water to the Veerapathiran Temple at Poorandampalayam.

The pilgrims had encountered a wild elephant that was lurking near the river. While seven had escaped from the elephant attack, three people were attacked by the elephant.



Out of the three, Aruchamy succumbed on the spot and others, Duraisamy and Sivanandham sustained serious injuries. The duo were taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment and Aruchamy’s mortal remains were sent to CMCH for autopsy.

This is the second elephant attack in the area within a month in Poondi reserve area. 

Meanwhile, foresters have advised the public from refrain from venturing inside the reserve forests, as owing to summer, elephant movement is high near the Noyyal River that runs nearby.
