Coimbatore: In what could be a fourth instance of continuous forest fires in the Coimbatore Forest Division, the Maruthamalai forest that falls under the division started burning around noon on Saturday.
Smoke emerged from the region towards the left side of the Maruthamalai temple and the region soon started to see a major fire that continued to spread.
Though officials were deployed immediately to put out the fire, it was not under control until evening. Forest fire has also been reported from the Thadagam region, which is behind Maruthamalai.
Notably, Mettupalayam range also saw two major forest fires in the last seven days, which were put out.
Though officials claim that the trees would start springing once the first showers of rain hit the ground, the weather in Coimbatore is expected to increase because of the dryness in the forests nearby.
