Coimbatore : The spine surgery unit of City's Ganga Hospital has bagged five awards in the recently concluded Annual conference of the Asia Pacific Spine Society held in Seoul, Korea.

More than 600 surgeons globally participated in the meeting during which awards for the best research paper in both Clinical Research and Basic Science Research were awarded.

In the clinical research paper submitted by the team from Ganga Hospital in connection with 'novel and sophisticated methods of treating spine fractures using intraoperative computer navigated surgery', the team described a method by which complicated fractures can be fixed monosegmentally, thereby avoiding long fixation, which will result in decrease in movements of the neck.

The papers presented from the unit also received the Best Paper Award of the Asian Spine Journal and will be published as lead articles in international journals. The clinical research was jointly performed by Dr.S Rajasekaran, Dr.Ajoy Prasad Shetty, Dr. Rishi Mugesh Kanna and Dr. Dilip Chand Raja and the paper was presented by Dilip.

The basic science research was performed by Dr. S. Rajasekaran, Dr. Chitraa Tangavel, Dr. Raveendran Muthurajan, Dr. Vijay Anand, Dr. Dilip Chand Raja, Ms. Sharon Miracle Nayagam and Ms. Monica Steffi Matchado. The basic science research was performed at Ganga Research Centre, which is a DSIR approved research facility set up to probe into the molecular solutions for low back pain.

About the Research

The basic science research was on advanced proteomics and molecular science which probed into the fetal proteomics. The study aims to identify proteins and biological pathways during the formative stages of fetus which can be utilized for regenerative therapies in adults. This can be used for reversing disc degenerative disease, which is the most common cause for low back pain.
