Coimbatore: In view of upcoming Lok sabha election to be held on April 18, 180 officials under flying squad head and 30 teams comprising of 150 officials, under monitoring team head will carry out search operations 24/7 in the district, said a release from the Collectorate.
A total of 30 flying squads, 30 static teams have been deployed for 24/7 hours surveillance. And 20 video surveillance teams have been appointed to monitor, if public meeting and rallies violate the model code of conduct.
With the model code of conduct in force, the Election Commission is tightening its grip over illegal money transactions during elections. People carrying more than Rs. 50,000 are advised to carry proper documents. Failing to produce documents, the officers of flying squad will confiscate the cash and hand over the same would be handed over to the Income tax department.
The Election flying squad have seized Rs. 9.7 crore till date since the day model code of conduct came into effect, among which Rs. 3.3 crore, 154.5 kg gold and 277 silk sarees were returned back after the owners produced appropriate documents. And, 100 kg of sugar, 3500 kg of rice, 2,500 kg of wheat, 784 kg of dal, 2303 liquor bottles, Rs 37,000 worth 15 kg gutka, 2 kg ganja 5 guns have been seized and handed over to nearby police stations. And, Rs. 62,304 worth 128 travel bags and 4800 sample vote slips were handed over to the treasury today.
