Coimbatore: Shankar of Sungam here in the city, who studied only till Class 6 has always evinced keen interest in engineering, following which he has tried his hand at new inventions. With the light weight aluminium pipe, he had made wings resembling the image of a bird with its wings spread.

Shankar has now come up with a bicycle that can function in two different ways. Elaborating on his new invention, Shankar said, "Since bicycles that run on battery are sold from Rs.25,000 to Rs.30,000 now, it is possible to manufacture more number of bicycles at a low cost. These bicycles are designed in such a way that it could easily be manoeuvred on hilly terrain. It can travel up to 40 km in a single charge. The bicycle also has added features such as an indicator, headlights and all other features akin to a two-wheeler."
He has also fixed the photographs of the two late former Chief Ministers MGR and Jayalalithaa on his bicycle which can shine during night time. " I am an ardent fan of MGR since my childhood days. The duration of building this motorcycle took up to two years. I tried to show it to the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa but in vain."

"People are showing interest towards eco-friendly bicycles as they are available at an affordable price. People here are showing interest in buying my bicycle. As financial support is required to make it available for more people, if any bicycle company can come forward to provide the patent, up to 100 bicycles can be manufactured per day," noted Shankar.
