Coimbatore: After the Periyar statue at Aranthangi in Pudukottai district was vandalised on Monday, security has been beefed up at all Periyar statues in the district.
The Periyar statue situated near Aranthangi government hospital in Pudukottai was found vandalised on Monday. Following this, members of Dravidar Kazhagam and DMK staged an agitation at the vandalised site condemning the act.

The aforesaid Periyar statue was inaugurated in the year 1998 by Dravidar Kazhagam.
Officials said steps were being taken to repair the statue and the investigations are on.
Following this, security has been beefed up for the Periyar statues situated in Coimbatore -- Puliyakulam, Gandhipuram, Sundarapuram, Kuniyamuthur and Sulur.
While all the statues have been masked since the day model code of conduct came into effect, Periyar statues were left undisturbed, as the election commission stated that Periyar is no way connected to the elections.
