Madurai : Even as the countdown has begun for various Jallikattu events across the State, hundreds of bull tamers are queuing up for the mandatory physical fitness test being conducted in Avaniapuram for the famous ‘Avaniapuram Jallikattu.’
Madurai : Even as the countdown has begun for various Jallikattu events across the State, hundreds of bull tamers are queuing up for the mandatory physical fitness test being conducted in Avaniapuram for the famous ‘Avaniapuram Jallikattu.’
Hailing from all parts of Tamil Nadu, the bull tamers are tested for health parameters such as height (above 150 cm), weight, blood pressure. Those who clear the test are given tokens for the Jallikattu event slated for tomorrow morning at 8 am.
“The government has also introduced insurance cover for the bull tamers this year, and the injuries and fatalities would be covered under the scheme,” said an official. "The tamers would also be subjected to blood tests to test for any traces of alcohol and other intoxicants, and their participation will be banned if they are found to be under any such influence,” emphasized the official.
While the tamers have to be present at the Vaadivasal of the Jallikattu event before 8 am tomorrow, they are allowed entry into the taming arena based on token numbers.
All tamers are in the age group of 18 to 40 years. While 596 bull tamers have registered for the Avaniapuram event, as many as 691 Jallikattu bulls are to be part of the event. The bulls which have been brought here from various parts of Tamil Nadu have also been issued with tokens after a mandatory medical test.
For the ‘Palamedu Jallikattu’ which is scheduled for January 16, as many as 986 bulls and 836 bull tamers will participate.
In the world-famous ‘Alanganallur Jallikattu’ to be held on January 17, 846 bull tamers will take to the field. Bull tamers have congregated in large numbers from Madurai, Thanjavur, and Salem districts to take part in these Jallikattu events which are being held in various parts of Tamil Nadu.
