Corporation officials collect fine of Rs.53,500 for holding stock of banned plastic materials

Coimbatore: Following implementation of plastic ban from January 1 in Tamil Nadu, the officials from Coimbatore Corporation raided several shops and seized 486.5 kgs of banned plastic materials and imposed, an on the spot fine of Rs.53,500 in the city, today.


Coimbatore:  Following implementation of plastic ban from January 1 in Tamil Nadu, the officials from Coimbatore Corporation raided several shops and seized 486.5 kgs of banned plastic materials and imposed, an on the spot fine of Rs.53,500 in the city, today.

Since the announcement of the ban on usage of single use plastic materials such as covers, polythene bags and plastic cups, both public and traders were advised to switch over to eco-friendly alternatives like cotton bags, paper plates and banana leaves for packaging, as well as daily usage. 

All district Corporation officials, Municipality, Panchayats, food and safety department and local bodies have been instructed to keep a strict vigil on the situation and initiate action against the offenders.



Back here in the city, today an official team headed by Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner, Dr. K Vijayakarthikeyan inspected various grocery shops, hotels and bakeries located in all the five zones, and seized 486.5 kgs of banned plastic products such as polythene covers, single use tumblers and straws. 

Banned plastic products weighing 175 kgs from east zone, 136.5 kgs from south zone, 110 kgs from west zone, 50 kgs from central zone and 15 kgs from north zone were seized. A total fine amounting to Rs.53,500 was collected from the shop owners for stocking and using banned single use plastic products.

The Coimbatore Corporation has also received around 331 kgs of banned plastic products from traders and public who handed them over, voluntarily. 

"All shops in the city will be inspected continuously and stringent action will be initiated against traders for using banned plastic products," said an official from Corporation.
