Coimbatore: A meeting of Coimbatore district residents welfare association was held at Ramanathapuram today. The members have decided to hoist black flags in their houses condemning the Coimbatore Corporation’s move to construct solid waste management facilities at residential areas.

There are 100 wards under the Coimbatore Corporation and the civic body is planning to construct a solid waste management plant for 2 wards each to handle the waste from residences, hotels, hospitals and others.

Condemning the move, the association has decided to organise a black flag protest across the city. The association members have also decided to conduct protests along with politicians and local residential associations if any of these local waste management plants starts functioning. The association is also planning to conduct discussions with various political parties here and organise a massive protest in front of Coimbatore Corporation with 10,000 members from all 100 wards.

Over 2000 members from 400 residential organisations, leaders from different political parties took part in this meeting. Ms. Sharmila Prince, Secretary, Senthil Nagar layout residents association said, “We are against the Corporation’s move to build solid waste management plants in residential areas. We fear that a situation similar to Vellalore may happen in our residential areas as well.”
