Tirupur : Condemning the erection of new High Tension (HT) power grid lines for power distribution and transmission through cultivable lands, and demanding better compensation, the affected farmers have been staging protests continuously, entering the third day today, at Tirupur.

The farmers continued their protests but this time in a novel way, dangling themselves from HT line replicas created for the agitation. The farmers staged the protest by singing an “oppari” and shouted slogans against the Power Grid Corporation of India and TANGEDCO. “The work has been going on in 16 districts in western Tamil Nadu, despite farmers opposing its implementation, tooth and nail," alleged the farmers.

They noted that officials have been unrelenting despite their opposition to the project, which would fragment cultivable lands and affect the livelihood of farmers. 16 districts including Coimbatore, Tirupur, Namakkal, Salem, Dindigul, and Dharmapuri will be highly affected, as this project could spell doom for the livelihood of small and marginal farmers and the farming community in general. Hence, the farmers have taken a warpath against the erection of the new HT power grid lines.
