Plane crashes onto busy Italian road after overshooting runway

A DHL cargo plane crashed onto a busy Italian road early on Friday morning after overshooting the runway at an airport north-east of Milan.

The two-person crew of the aircraft escaped unharmed from the incident, and there were no injuries on the ground.

Pictures posted on Twitter showed the aircraft's belly resting on a two-lane road with the nose poking onto another highway and resting on a guard rail.

Local media said there had been bad weather in the area at the time of the crash, which occurred just after 4 A.M. local times (3 A.M. BST) on Friday morning.

The airport was reopened by 7 A.M., but ENAC said travellers should contact the airlines to make sure their flights are operating.
