Two men posing as police officers allegedly extorted ₹38,000 from a senior citizen in Coimbatore by threatening him with arrest over a fabricated allegation of watching obscene videos. The Cyber Crime Police tracked down the accused and remanded them to judicial custody.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Cyber Crime Police have arrested two men for allegedly impersonating police officers and extorting ₹38,000 from a senior citizen by threatening him with arrest over a fabricated allegation of viewing obscene content on his mobile phone.

According to the police, Jagatheesan, a resident of Thudiyalur, received a phone call on May 15, 2026, from unidentified persons claiming to be officials attached to the Peelamedu Police Station. The callers falsely claimed to possess video evidence of him watching obscene content on his mobile phone and warned that he would be arrested unless he immediately paid an online court fine.

Fearing legal action, Jagatheesan borrowed money from friends and transferred ₹38,000 through Google Pay. Upon realising that he had been duped, he approached the Coimbatore City Cyber Crime Police and lodged a complaint.

Based on the complaint, the Cyber Crime Police registered a case in Crime No. 63/2026 under Sections 204, 308(2), 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, and initiated an investigation.

The investigation led to the identification of the accused as P. Sabari (25) of Pachapalayam and K. Vinu (21) of Chinniyampalayam. According to the police, the duo impersonated police personnel and intimidated the victim into transferring the money.

The Cyber Crime Police arrested both accused, produced them before a court, and remanded them to judicial custody at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
