Water Levels Rise in Coimbatore District Dams Due to Southwest Monsoon

Water inflow has increased in Aliyar, Parambikkulam, and Sholayar dams in Coimbatore district due to the southwest monsoon. Water Resources Department officials released water level and inflow details as of July 22, showing significant rise across major reservoirs.


Coimbatore: Water inflow has significantly increased in the major dams of Coimbatore district—Aliyar, Parambikkulam, and Sholayar—due to continuous southwest monsoon rainfall. The Water Resources Department officials released the water level details of these reservoirs as of July 22, 2024.

The Aliyar Dam, located near Anamalai, has a full capacity of 120 feet. As a result of rainfall in the catchment areas, the water level stood at 55.55 feet as of July 22. The dam is receiving an inflow of 239 cubic feet per second (cusecs). Currently, 250 cusecs of water is being released from the dam.

The Parambikkulam Dam near Pollachi has a full capacity of 72 feet. With the southwest monsoon continuing to bring rainfall, the water level has risen to 21.3 feet as of July 22. The dam is recording an inflow of 645 cusecs, while 40 cusecs is being released from the reservoir.

The Sholayar Dam near Valparai has a full capacity of 160 feet. Due to rainfall in the catchment areas, the water level reached 78.27 feet as of July 22. The dam is receiving an inflow of 545 cusecs, and currently 782 cusecs of water is being discharged, according to Water Resources Department officials.

With the southwest monsoon continuing to be active, the water levels in these dams are expected to rise gradually. Water Resources Department officials are continuously monitoring the situation and managing the water releases accordingly.
